two movies and a question

I watched Pixar’s Coco on a plane, which was absolutely a huge mistake, unless one likes weeping in front of strangers. I don’t.

Remember Hector? Gifted, loyal, devoted, desperate. When we meet him, he is out of options and completely on his knees, trying to get to his daughter. In a last-ditch effort, he dresses in drag, attempting to pass as Frida Kahlo. Frida is a noble and striking character in reality, but in this sweet animated film, Hector is made to look completely ridiculous. When he had no chance left, he made himself a fool for the girl he loved most.

Won't we all?

Another must-watch is La Vita E Bella, a 1997 comedy-drama. The entire film is in Italian, and through the subtitles, we watch an enchanting goofball, Guido, as he morphs from a single man into a husband and a father. The quirky fervor with which he woos the woman he’d eventually marry is the same energy he devotes to his young son—even as they are taken together to a concentration camp. That’s as much as I’ll say, as no one tells the story the way Roberto Benigni does, but I’ll assure you of this—when he had no chance left, he made himself a fool for the boy he loved most.

Won't we all?

That's all.
